“A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than he loves himself.”
Josh Billings
He is right. You cant think of a creature on this planet that is selfless in the way dogs are. It could be easy to just dump them into the same category as other animals. But, anyone who has ever been around a dog will know that they can become as much a part of the family as your own children and when they pass away, the grief is at the same level as losing a cherished sibling.
For this reason, it can be so distressing to see your four-legged furry companion suffering in any way. Whether it is arthritis, seizures, cancer or even something as basic as anxiety or depression, dogs suffer from the same conditions we do, although a lot of the time, they can’t communicate how they are feeling to us. When the dog is walking around and panting we can get annoyed and tell them to lie down. Imagine being told to lie down and shut up when you are in pain. How awful.
Anyway, in recent times, as well as the CBD boom for humans, there has been a great CBD boom for dogs. But, in an unregulated market, there are still a lot of questions and confusion. Let’s see if we can clear some stuff up for you.
What is CBD for Dogs?
- CBD for dogs is often a low-dose CBD product
- If you buy from a trusted source, the oil shouldn’t be any different from human-grade oil.
- CBD is thought to help dogs with pain, anxiety, seizures and many other conditions
For a long time, my girlfriend has hassled me to watch the film ‘Marley and Me’. But, whilst I am a fan of both the main actors and indeed, a great fan of dogs, I have to keep declining. You see, I tend to steer clear of any films that are about dogs.

The film Hachi was a good example of what dogs exemplify. They can teach us love, loyalty, and unconditional friendship. But, since dogs are such loyal friends, they can become attached. Thus, a whole series of anxiety-type conditions can arise in them. Separation anxiety is one of the most common. Thunderstorms can leave a dog quaking in their furry boots.
From Weedmaps.com:
Whether it’s for dogs or humans, there are countless CBD oil brands available. Dog owners who use CBD oil themselves and are considering trying it out for their dog may wonder if there is a difference between pet CBD oil and human CBD oil. The short answer is no.
“There should be no difference in ‘pet-quality’ oils,” said holistic veterinarian Judy Morgan. “However, oils cannot be labeled for humans and pets to use, as FDA does not allow that. Many human oils are pretty concentrated, so dosing becomes an issue for small pets.”
What if you want to utilize the same CBD oil as your faithful companion? Can humans take pet CBD oil without experiencing any adverse side effects? Morgan explained that if the CBD oil manufacturer is a good one, it will make oils that are human-grade – meaning this will be good enough for both you and your pet.
“Yes, dogs can use human CBD oil,” she said. “Humans could take pet CBD oil if it is human grade and not adulterated in any way.”
Does CBD Oil Work for Dogs?
CBD oil can be used to treat seizures, nausea, stress, anxiety, arthritis, back pain, symptoms of cancer, and gastrointestinal issues, among other health conditions in dogs.
When it comes to these things, recent trends have been moving towards giving dogs CBD oil. There is little formal study in this area. But, I have found that the results of this are obvious through your own experience. Many dog owners are finding that CBD oil is effective in treating pain and anxiety. Others have found it is effective in treating seizures.
Currently, there has been no formal study on how CBD affects dogs. What scientists do know is that cannabinoids interact with the endocannabinoid receptors located in the central and peripheral nervous systems, which help maintain balance in the body and keep it in a normal healthy state.
Cannabis oil can be used to treat seizures, nausea, stress, anxiety, arthritis, back pain, symptoms of cancer, and gastrointestinal issues, among other health conditions in dogs.
Relief is provided as the cannabinoids in marijuana interact with the endocannabinoid system, Shu explains. “It’s a series of receptors that run throughout the body,” he says. “The cannabinoids interact with the receptors in the body and modulate things like pain, anxiety, and nausea.”
Unlike some traditional pain medicine for dogs, medical cannabis has no life-threatening side effects with proper dosage, Shu points out. “It doesn’t damage the kidney, liver, or GI tract. The dogs aren’t high or sedated.”
Although it is clear here that they are talking about cannabis oil which can be defined from the legal perspective as having more than 0.3% THC. Still, in the end, they say ‘The dogs aren’t high or sedated’ which says that they may be talking about CBD oil but under the general banner of cannabis oil. Cannabis oil by definition probably would get your dog high as it contains a healthy dose of THC whilst CBD oil does not.
For older dogs, as well as older people, CBD may be very beneficial for the heart.

We can treat inflammation in the body, as well as muscle tension, with regular CBD oil. CBD is an anti-inflammatory and muscle relaxant. It reduces inflammation which, in turn, may reduce pain. Then, since oxygen can get to the brain, it can clear anxiety. Since muscle relaxation can open the channels, it can take some pressure off the heart.
Is CBD Safe for Dogs?

There doesn’t seem to be any known dangers to giving CBD to dogs although, in higher doses, it can cause drowsiness.
I used to know people whose dogs would get high from passively smoking Marijuana. Even though the dogs used to quite enjoy it, I have always been against giving either humans or animals substances that they don’t ask for.
Ideas on whether THC is toxic for dogs are mixed. Some alarmists talk about dogs dying after ingesting cannabis. But, it seems that in a lot of cases, the dog has consumed edibles that contained huge amounts of chocolate, sugar, and xylitol, all of which are extremely toxic for dogs. If a dog were to eat somebody’s stash, they wouldn’t get high, since raw cannabis when ingested does nothing. The THC has to be activated by being exposed to heat above a certain level. This is called Decarboxolation.
How to buy and administer CBD oil for your dog
Buy high quality, organic products from a trusted source to avoid the risk of toxins or misleading labels.
There are dog treats you can buy with CBD but, you may not quite know what you are buying, they could have a whole number of undisclosed ingredients and could be highly processed. Better to buy a high-quality brand of pure CBD oil and add it to their food. You can also feed it into their mouths although they won’t generally like this. Massage it into the crown of their head for a relaxing effect.
Amazingly, we live in a time where people care for their pets so much. It blows me away that natural products like this are available to help us reduce the suffering of our Mates.
To me, the world is getting better and despite our shortcomings as humans, it is a very exciting time to be alive. The way we look after our pets is a sign of the compassion that we have as part of our being. Where there is compassion, there is true, natural intelligence.

7 Aug 2019Hi Emmanuel. It is of great importance. This is something that is going to change the way we deal with anxiety and pain in our four legged friends. Best thing for you is to try it. Go for a very high quality brand with extremely lo THC (Less than 0.2%) then see how your dog goes on it. Good luck!

7 Aug 2019Hello Mate. Thanks for the great comment. Some CBD is branded specifically for dogs but its mostly just branding. You just want a very pure, high quality oil with less than 0.2% THC if you can. Give your dog a good massage with it 🙂

7 Aug 2019Hi there!
It is the first time that I read this, the truth is that it is a topic of considerable importance, especially for those of us who have pets.
My wife and I love animals especially dogs, and in our house we have a wonderful dog, which we know in the future gets older and we know that she will have some symptoms of which we cannot help him feel better, in my opinion, I I would like to know how good it is to be able to give this medicine to dogs.
Even so, the information is good and I think it can help many people who are interested in this topic.

7 Aug 2019Cbd oils for dogs too? Wow, that’s really awesome. I use cbd oil myself and I can very well testify to its effectiveness. I never really thought that it could be used to help clear the minds of dogs and take away sadness in older dogs. Well, I think I should try it out on my dog. Is there any specific cbd for dogs or one can use the ones for us for our pooches too.
