I know a few people who eat regular meals like Joey Chestnut eats hot dogs. I won’t mention them by name but these people stuff their faces and finish meals so quick that it’s embarrassing. There are quick eaters and then there are quick eaters where you just think ‘This person has an issue’.

In fact, it may take up to 20 minutes for your brain to realize that you’re full. When you eat fast, it’s much easier to eat a lot more food than your body really needs. Over time, excess calorie intake can lead to weight gain.

Eating too much?

This is one of the obvious ones. It is also a simplification. If one ate broccoli all day, would one still get fat? I doubt it. Dr. Hyman says:

One of the most important principles of weight loss is never to starve yourself. The question is whether or not you are eating enough of the right calories, not whether or not you are eating too many calories.

So  Dr. Hyman says eating too much isn’t a problem, it’s much more about what we eat.

It must be down to eating too much fat then? Not really. The low-fat diets of the nineties are just about gone in terms of popularity. The keto diet is just one expression of the modern discovery that it is not fat that is the true enemy, but sugar.

an increasing body of evidence is beginning to suggest that when eaten in isolation, fat doesn’t contribute to weight gain. On the other hand, dozens of studies indicate that sugar alone is significantly tied to packing on pounds.

That’s not all. A recent analysis found that drinking sugar-sweetened beverages like soda was associated with an increased risk of death, particularly among people who drank at least two a day.

“There is one thing we know about fats,” he wrote. “Fat consumption does not cause weight gain. To the contrary, it might actually help us shed a few pounds.”

That means that foods like buttery avocados, rich salmon, and savoury nuts should probably have a place in your diet. If you banned them during the low-fat dieting craze of the 1990s, it’s time to bring them back.

Time and time again, studies that do this suggest that people who cut back on fats not only don’t lose weight, they don’t see other health benefits like a reduced risk of disease, either.

In contrast, people who eat lots of fats but curb their intake of refined carbs like sugary cereals, white bread, and white rice tend to see both of these gains.

Sure, sugar is not the only culprit. Advocates of the Keto diet swear off fruit, grains and milk, the things known as ‘carbohydrates’. But carbohydrate is just another word for sugar.

So, why does sugar make us put on weight?

If you go deep into this subject, you will find a lot of talk about glucose v fructose and how fructose is the real bad guy. I watched a movie called ‘That Sugar Film’ which was particularly eye-opening in terms of explaining the impacts of sugar on the body. The filmmaker Damon Gameau even took it to the extreme of demonstrating the effects of sugar on his own body. Watch the film and you will see that the effects are devastating in terms of general health but also, just from eating foods with added sugar (not including sweets, sodas or desserts), he stacked on a lot of weight very quickly.

Can CBD help me lose weight?

According to Healthline, CBD may:

  • Boost the metabolism and reduce appetite
  • Promote ‘browning of fat cells’ 

Two types of fat — white and brown — exist in your body.

White fat is the predominant form, responsible for storing and supplying energy while insulating and cushioning your organs (19Trusted Source).

It’s also the type of fat most associated with chronic illnesses — such as diabetes and heart disease — when accumulated in excess (20Trusted Source21Trusted Source).

On the other hand, brown fat is responsible for generating heat by burning calories. Individuals with a healthy weight tend to have more brown fat than overweight people (19Trusted Source).

You can convert white fat to brown by exercising, getting adequate sleep, and exposing yourself to cold temperatures (22Trusted Source23Trusted Source).

Interestingly, research shows that CBD may aid this process.

A test-tube study found that CBD led to “browning” in white fat cells and enhanced the expression of specific genes and proteins that promote brown fat (24Trusted Source).

However, human research is needed to confirm these effects.

But at least it won’t make me gain weight right?

Although CBD may have a beneficial effect on appetite and weight loss, it may conversely cause weight gain.

CBD has been shown to increase appetite in some studies. In fact, one of the most common side effects of CBD treatment is appetite change.

In one study, researchers interviewed 117 parents of children being treated with CBD to control epilepsy symptoms.

Although the parents reported a reduction in epilepsy symptoms, 30% of them claimed that CBD oil significantly increased their children’s appetite (27Trusted Source).

However, studies show mixed results on the effects of CBD on appetite.

One 3-month study gave 23 children with Dravet syndrome — a type of epilepsy — up to 11.4 mg of CBD per pound of body weight (25 mg per kg). Some children experienced increases in appetite, but others experienced decreases (28Trusted Source).

Additionally, a recent review in 2,409 people who use CBD found that 6.35% experienced increased hunger as a side effect (29Trusted Source).

More research is needed to understand the full effects of CBD on appetite, as it seems to vary. Many factors may influence hunger when taking CBD, including genetics and the type of product used (28Trusted Source).

It’s amazing how some studies go on about a side-effect, In this case, 6.35% experienced hunger as a side effect. That’s about 152 people in a study of over 2400. Has anyone considered that they might not have had breakfast?

So once again, as we do with many aspects of CBD, we end up somewhere in the middle talking about how CBD affects everybody differently. The trouble with relying on a single compound to assist with something like weight loss is that 101 other measures could significantly or subtly create changes in body composition. It’s not just eating, its also about exercise. It is in the sharing of some similar qualities to exercise where I believe, CBD may play a role.

Look at what happens when we exercise:

The heart rate goes up which pumps blood and oxygen to our muscles. This unblocks the channels of the body which is why we can get a lot of phlegm when we exercise. We think that the phlegm is coming from our lungs but it is being removed from all of the channels in our body. Exercising like this lubricates and cleans the channels allowing blood, oxygen and other compounds to be transported more efficiently around the body. This is why we feel so good after we exercise.

CBD shares some but not all of these qualities. It is no substitute for exercise, although I’m sure it won’t be long before someone is claiming that it is.

It does, however, relax the muscles of the body and decrease inflammation. This has a similar effect in that it opens up the channels of the body allowing blood, oxygen and other compounds to flow more naturally. There is a basic belief that when we exercise we simply ‘burn’ calories and that is why we lose weight, but I feel there is more to it than that. When the transportation system of the body is clean, open and functional, things can work as they are supposed to. Those things include getting rid of toxins from the body, digesting food properly and yes, weight loss. So the trouble with filling your body with sugar, in my opinion, is not just the calories, it’s the clogging of the system that occurs. Sugar heats and thickens the blood and this is very detrimental to its processes. You can get a minor sense of this by thinking about how you go to the toilet when you eat a lot of sugar- it’s sticky and unpleasant; passing it is difficult. However, when you eat a lot of greens and wholefoods, it becomes slippery and effortless. Who would deny the pleasure of having a shit that slides right out?


So, some studies say CBD can help with weight loss, but as always they are not definitive and until there are more regulations and studies on CBD, they never will be. The things to remember are:
