Why is CBD oil for epilepsy the most talked about use of CBD? Perhaps because of Epidiolex?
Epidiolex’s website says it is:
a prescription medicine that is used to treat seizures associated with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome or Dravet syndrome in patients 2 years of age and older.
So essentially, it is a ‘drug’ that is fully approved by the FDA for the treatment of seizures. In that case, this surely must be some incredibly complex pharmaceutical chemical right? Wrong.
According to RXlist.com:
EPIDIOLEX (cannabidiol) oral solution is a clear, colorless to yellow liquid containing cannabidiol at a concentration of 100 mg/mL. Inactive ingredients include dehydrated alcohol, sesame seed oil, strawberry flavor, and sucralose. EPIDIOLEX contains no ingredient made from a gluten-containing grain (wheat, barley, or rye).
Yes, you read that correctly, the active ingredient in Epidiolex is Cannabidiol, more popularly known as CBD. But if you type ‘Is Epidiolex just CBD?‘ into Google, you will find an answer neither one way or another.
There are two sides to this: a yay and a nay. The yay is that people struggling with epilepsy now have access to CBD. The other part of the yay is that surely this demonstrates that CBD as an active ingredient is effective in treating epilepsy.
The nay is that CBD oil, which is usually quite a pure version of CBD, is still unapproved by the FDA. I have written enough about the potential motivations for this so I won’t go on about it here.
Fortunately, now, in many places, CBD oil is legal and, hopefully, the rest of the world is catching up.
Before we talk more about the benefits of CBD oil for epilepsy, watch this video. (Warning: Footage of child epilepsy may disturb some people)
Of course, in true human fashion, there will be an immediate dialogue about whether this video is fake.
But there is no need. Whilst this shows direct footage of what CBD oil can do, there are enough case studies out there to show that the potential benefits of CBD for epilepsy sufferers might be real. If the FDA has approved a drug in which CBD is the main component, surely that is evidence enough right?
The Cost: Epidiolex and CBD Oil
Some people talk about one of the biggest drawbacks of CBD oil to be price. But let’s consider the price of Epidiolex and the price of CBD oil together. The website drugs.com says:
This Epidiolex price guide is based on using the Drugs.com discount card which is accepted at most U.S. pharmacies. The cost for Epidiolex oral liquid (100 mg/mL) is around $1,299 for a supply of 100 milliliters, depending on the pharmacy you visit. Prices are for cash paying customers only and are not valid with insurance plans.
Ok, consider that this is based on their ‘discount card’ – $1,299 for 100ml of Epidiolex.
Yahoo Finance says:
When it comes to estimating the cost of Epidiolex, all anyone has to go on is the previously quoted estimate released by the company. At $32,500 a year, Epidiolex would cost roughly $2,708 a month, $677 a week, and approximately $96 a day.
By anyone’s estimate, $96 a day to stop your child from having seizures is an absolute joke.
Of course in this world where there are fine lines between mafia, governments, and corporations, one simply cannot make any kind of comment on whether this stuff is worth it or not. But I will say this:
CBD oil is now legal, in the States at least. As far as I am aware there would be no law against you trying basic CBD oil first as seen in the above video. Sure, CBD oil is still pricey, but for 100ml of the strong stuff (3500mg) you are looking at a little over $500. Of course, everyone is different, but I’m fairly sure you wouldn’t be spending anything like $30,000 on this stuff.
In comparing Epidiolex to other epilepsy drugs, YF says it is cheaper:
Although this seems rather high, it’s not as outrageous as one may think when compared to other epilepsy medicines. For example, the epilepsy medicine Fycompa can cost anywhere between $1000 to $1500 a month; and most epilepsy patients take multiple medications.
But, in their comparison to CBD it gets more complex:
Assuming that the patient medicated twice a day, a single tube would last for two weeks. That means a month’s supply of Gold Formula would cost approximately $320, and a year’s worth would cost $3,840. When compared to Epidiolex, the difference in price seems staggering; but is it really? When taking insurance and Medicaid into account, the price difference starts to even out. According to The Wall Street Journal, Medicaid recipients could expect to pay anywhere between $5-$10 for Epidiolex. Patients with insurance could expect to pay upwards of $200 a month, depending on their plan.
Don’t worry, it can be simpler.
What you are paying for is the CBD (the active ingredient) so the rest doesn’t matter.
The article goes on to talk about how, fortunately, under Medicaid, patients could be paying very little. Which is great, except for the fact that this means pretty much everyone is chipping in to pay thousands to these big companies. They don’t care as they are still getting their money, they are just pulling it from everyone’s taxes instead.
Until the issue of corporate corruption is solved in America, you might always be paying as much as a new luxury car every year to stop your child from having epilepsy. But, just know that there are options. It is widely thought that Epidiolex is just CBD with some flavorings.
CBD oil is available in ethical and clean ways that won’t cost you as much as a new truck.
