I grew up with diabetes in my family, so I know both the effects and the fears. But trying to convince many diabetics of new ways of doing things can be difficult.

Many years ago carbohydrates were seen as the backbone of managing diabetes and diabetic people were seen getting lots of carbs into their diets to ‘stay healthy’. Nowadays it is much well-known that a low carb diet is healthy for diabetics. It is also known that the amount of insulin taken should not be one standard dose but should be adjusted according to the diet that one is eating.

A low carb, clean diet as well as regular exercise has been shown to benefit diabetes patients in profound ways. Many other things have been shown to help. One of these potential helpers that is being talked about a lot is CBD Oil, and diabetes is something that people are starting to believe can be helped.

Diabetes is a disease that occurs when your blood glucose, also called blood sugar, is too high. Blood glucose is your main source of energy and comes from the food you eat. Insulin, a hormone made by the pancreas, helps glucose from food get into your cells to be used for energy. Sometimes your body doesn’t make enough—or any—insulin or doesn’t use insulin well. Glucose then stays in your blood and doesn’t reach your cells.

Over time, having too much glucose in your blood can cause health problems. Although diabetes has no cure, you can take steps to manage your diabetes and stay healthy.

What are the different types of diabetes?

The most common types of diabetes are type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes

If you have type 1 diabetes, your body does not make insulin. Your immune system attacks and destroys the cells in your pancreas that make insulin. Type 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed in children and young adults, although it can appear at any age. People with type 1 diabetes need to take insulin every day to stay alive.

Type 2 diabetes

If you have type 2 diabetes, your body does not make or use insulin well. You can develop type 2 diabetes at any age, even during childhood. However, this type of diabetes occurs most often in middle-aged and older people. Type 2 is the most common type of diabetes.

Gestational diabetes

Gestational diabetes develops in some women when they are pregnant. Most of the time, this type of diabetes goes away after the baby is born. However, if you’ve had gestational diabetes, you have a greater chance of developing type 2 diabetes later in life. Sometimes diabetes diagnosed during pregnancy is actually type 2 diabetes.

Other types of diabetes

Less common types include monogenic diabetes, which is an inherited form of diabetes, and cystic fibrosis-related diabetes .

Diabetes is all about Insulin, its production, and its distribution.

Insulin production occurs mostly in the pancreas. It is then released into the bloodstream to manufacture energy by using up the glucose in the bloodstream. This process occurs mostly when we eat something high in carbohydrates like a candy bar or white rice. Insulin is released and begins the gathering of the glucose. This gathering cleans and thins the blood since sugar also has the effect of thickening the blood which in turn makes the whole system including the heart work harder. The trouble is that over time, for this process to still be effective, the pancreas needs to still be able to produce insulin and that insulin needs to have a clean distribution system on which to travel. If any of these things are off, then the system is not able to remove the sugar from the system quick enough and this begins the condition known as diabetes.

This is why diabetes patients inject insulin into the system. It is presumed that the pancreas cannot produce insulin so the insulin is injected directly instead. But what if the pancreas can produce insulin, but it has a problem with distributing it? Or what if the pancreas isn’t permanently damaged but cannot produce due to some other issue in the body around inflammation or blockage?

This is where, in certain situations, CBD oil may be able to help.

CBD oil is a powerful anti-inflammatory and muscle relaxant. In reducing inflammation and helping the muscles relax, it opens up the channels of the distribution system allowing blood and oxygen to flow and allowing the insulin to move freely within the bloodstream.

In removing inflammation, it may also reduce swelling in the pancreas and in other areas which may be the root cause of the dysfunction of the pancreas itself.

From Diabetes.co.uk:

The benefits of CBD for treating diabetes-related health problems include reduced inflammation and improved blood glucose control.

In 2015, a study revealed that CBD had anti-inflammatory effects on rats. Given that excess inflammation is known to impact the development of insulin resistance and therefore type 2 diabetes, this could have benefits for humans.

Meanwhile, in 2016, University of Nottingham researchers showed that CBD in combination with another cannabis compound called tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV), helped lower blood sugar levels and increase insulin production in people with type 2 diabetes. [362]

GW Pharmaceuticals, a UK-based company, has developed a cannabis spray called Sativex which utilises both CBD and THCV to help treat muscle spasms in multiple sclerosis. The company is in the process of developing a similar spray which could aid blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes.

Furthermore, Healthline says:

Diabetes is an inflammatory condition and CBD does have anti-inflammatory properties. In research, CBD has shown promise in reducing insulin resistance and moderating blood sugars for people with type 2 not taking insulin.

So which brand and how much to take?

You should choose a full spectrum, CO2 extracted organic CBD oil. You can begin with a simple serving per day and work your way up there. Starting with too high a dose can increase liver and blood toxicity as CBD can increase the detoxification process in your body. So begin slowly and work up as needed. Our recommended brand is CBD Biocare. There are a lot of good brands out there but also a lot of very bad ones so please be careful.

How to take CBD oil.

Place the oil under your tongue and let it soak in for up to a minute. The taste may not be incredibly pleasant, perhaps a little grassy. Overall it is not too bad and it’s important to remember that this is a supplement, not candy. There are other ways of taking CBD oil in the form of gummies or capsules. I feel though, that the pure oil is the most effective way to go since, whilst effective, other forms are generally more processed and may contain unpredictable amounts of sugar and other additives.
