cbd oil and asthma water
Asthma can make you feel like you are breathing through a tiny straw

In the Chemical Brothers song, ‘Block Rockin’ Beats’, there is a sample that sounds exactly like someone in the middle of an asthma attack.

If you are not familiar with the song, I will post the video below for your viewing and listening pleasure. The sample always stood out to me because as a kid, I had asthma. OK, I promised myself no-nonsense on this subject as it’s just not that funny. That is the last of it, I am 90% sure. CBD Oil and Asthma -A Fairly Serious Guide.

My asthma was triggered by dust mostly. I couldn’t sleep in any room that had a carpet. As I got older, I started smoking from the age of 13 and this didn’t help either. My Brother was worse. Growing up in Old English houses with a combo of damp, mold and dust was a real challenge. Anyhow, if you are not familiar with the torture that is asthma, imagine that you have to suddenly breathe through a tiny little straw and as much as you want to suck in a big lungful of air, you can only get a tiny bit at a time.

My asthma went away suddenly and mysteriously when I was around 17. These days, my lungs are strong but I empathize with people who struggle to breathe and, with parents that have watched their children struggle to breathe and even die at the hands of this disease.

If you experience asthma, then you know what it is. It is an inflammation of the airways that narrows one’s capacity to breathe.

Running can also be a trigger for asthma

For me, the inflammation was caused by breathing in irritants such as dust. When the channels are irritated, they inflame and this blocks the air from getting into the lungs. Another thing that would trigger my asthma was running. They say this is caused by the drying of the airways through increased breathing. The drying out of the airways causes them to become inflamed. But what causes Asthma? Asthma Australia gives a rather vague answer:

The causes of asthma are not fully understood and researchers continue to investigate genetic and environment factors.

People with asthma often have a family history of asthma, eczema and hay fever.

Research has shown that exposure chemicals, particles and gases in the environment can increase the risk of developing asthma.

This includes

  • Tobacco smoke (especially as a baby or young child)
  • Pollution from bushfires, traffic and industry
  • Some workplace chemicals.

Some studies have also found obesity can increase the risk of developing asthma.

Researchers continue to try to find out more about what causes asthma and how we might prevent it.

But, honestly, whilst Ventolin sales are at an all-time high, why would we want to prevent it? Right?

Dealing with an Asthma Attack

It seems that the goal of dealing with an asthma attack should be to reduce the inflammation in the airways. This can be done using a steroid such as a Ventolin inhaler which seems like an effective method although the toxicity of Ventolin and other inhalers is well known.

Another way is by inhaling steam.

It is said that some of the inflammation can be caused by a drying of the airways. The inhalation of steam provides well-needed moisture to the airways which can help with the symptoms by reducing inflammation.

Slowing the breathing down

This is critical since the airways are narrowed. It is surprising how little air we need. People often start to panic when they are having an attack and so their heart rate goes up and their breathing increases when it should be decreasing. If you can apply slow controlled breathing during an attack it will be much more comfortable.

Coffee and other high-caffeine drinks

These have been known to dilate the bronchial channels and open the chest. If there is time and the patient can remain relaxed, try giving them a cup of coffee although be aware that caffeine can also increase panic and anxiety. From the New York Times:

In a 2007 study in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, researchers pooled and analyzed the results of a half dozen clinical trials looking at the effects of caffeine on asthmatics. They found that caffeine produced small improvements in airway function for up to four hours, compared with a placebo, and that even a small dose — less than the amount in a cup of Starbucks coffee — could improve lung function for up to two hours.

Anti-inflammatories are important in this process.

If you have time and can remain calm you should make a cup of chamomile tea. If you have a chamomile tincture, that is even better. Chamomile is an anti-inflammatory and muscle relaxant. Some people have talked about the benefits of Gingko for asthma patients. Another centuries-old treatment for asthma is Ephedra (Ma Huang)  although this natural herb is now illegal (Study).

What About CBD Oil?

Taking a few drops when you are having an asthma attack might have a powerful effect in reducing inflammation as well as opening and dilating the airways. Some companies are doing vape pens for asthma similar to a Ventolin spray. I have never used CBD oil for asthma as I haven’t had asthma for years. But, I do know people that have experienced tremendous effects though. Still, I would suggest having an inhaler on hand at all times for emergencies. According to Formula Swiss:

Though a 1970 study showed that smoking cannabis can widen the respiratory air passages and have positive effects on lungs as compared to smoking tobacco, but people are still hesitant to smoke cannabis. However most methods for asthma involves inhalers, it is a better alternative to use CBD vaporizers. Vaporizing CBD provides your body with maximum CBD content that helps in fighting asthma attacks. When CBD oil is vaporized it provides the maximum concentration. Vaporizing CBD oil also does not have negative effects on a person’s throat or lungs.

Dr Dustin Sulak, a medical and cannabis physician stated that 90% of people with asthma can take single vaporize inhalation. If done right, then people will be able to breathe deeper, expand their lungs and relieve constriction. During an asthma attack, a CBD vaporizer or tincture is ideal as it will give immediate results without irritating the system.

It is good to remember that vaporizing CBD might also lead to irritation of the lungs. Of course, like anything, different things work for everyone and so trial and error is always important, whilst having other methods you know to be effective on hand such as a Ventolin.
