When I first had arthritis explained to me during a yoga course in 2014, I winced.

I was told that we have fluid around our joints known as synovial fluid. Rather than an actual fluid, this is a jelly-like substance that lubricates our bones as they rub up against one another. Another layer is cartilage. But what happens when these protective measures start to go wrong? What if we run out of fluid or the cartilage wears down, and when it comes to CBD oil and arthritis, can CBD help at all?

On the website rheumatoidarthritis.org, Dr. Jennifer Freeman, MD gives her view of CBD and Arthritis.

The most precarious and debilitating symptoms suffered by arthritis patients include pain, stiffness, and decreased movement within the joints, all of which can be severe and worsen over time. In addition, there are other symptoms that are just as troublesome, such as anxiety and depression. Not only that, but it can become especially trying when you have to contend with other medical problems that tend to coexist with arthritis, like heart disease, diabetes, and obesity.

Some medications and treatment programs can potentially help ease these negative effects, but many people are searching for a more natural pain relief option. This is where CBD oil comes into play.

I have known quite a few people with arthritis ranging from mild symptoms to the absolute worst.

Imagine two bones rubbing together and becoming inflamed and you begin to get a mild idea of the torture that is arthritis. One particular friend I know became utterly crippled by the disease and could barely leave the house. The worst thing about it was, he was 26. So arthritis isn’t reserved for old people. It can happen to old or young of any species.

According to Medical News Today, the body’s endocannabinoid system has two cannabinoid receptors: CB1 and CB2.

A majority of CB1 receptors are located in the brain and are associated with cognitive actions related to coordination, mood, thinking, memory, and appetite. The CB2 receptors, on the other hand, can be found in the immune system. This makes them more responsible for the body’s response to pain and inflammation.

Tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, attaches to the CB1 receptors, which explains why smoking or otherwise ingesting marijuana affects users on a cognitive level.

However, CBD impacts the CB2 receptors. And it does so indirectly, not by attaching to the CB2 receptor, but by enticing the body to make more of its own cannabinoids. This creates a positive effect on the body’s pain and inflammation responses.

The long and short of this is that CBD is considered a strong anti-inflammatory.

It is in this context that it is considered to be a treatment for arthritis. In my other articles such as CBD oil and inflammation, I have talked about how muscle tension and inflammation interrupt the body’s natural ability to transport compounds. I believe that this transportation mechanism is vital in maintaining a healthy system and keeping inflammation and stress-based tension in check.

According to Dr. Jennifer, CBD Oil eases arthritis pain

One of the primary CBD oil benefits for arthritis sufferers is its positive effect on pain, and research confirms it.

study published in the journal Pain in December 2017 analyzed whether CBD could prevent osteoarthritis pain and joint neuropathy. Based on their findings, researchers affirmed that it did both because it decreased joint inflammation and served as a protectant to the nerves.

It is a common theory that pain, like a lot of ‘feelings’ is a warning system from the brain which is telling us that something is wrong and needs to change.

I have talked about this being the case with stress hormones such as cortisol. The theory is that, when something becomes inflamed, it is at the point where damage is being done. Imagine what we could do to our bodies if we didn’t have pain or stress hormones. So these things could be considered motivation to keep our bodies in good health and alive. Instead of shutting off these pain signals from the brain, another approach would be to deal with the underlying problem which may be the inflammation that is occurring.

Medical News Today lists two types of arthritis:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis (RA): An autoimmune disease in which a person’s immune system attacks their joints, causing inflammation. RA commonly affects the hands and feet and leads to painful, swollen, and stiff joints.
  • Osteoarthritis (OA): A degenerative disease that affects joint cartilage and bones, causing pain and stiffness. It often affects the hip, knee, and thumb joints.

So essentially, Rheumatoid is an issue with the immune system whilst Osteoarthritis it seems, comes from wear and tear on the joints. It goes on to list some studies that make the case for CBD oil and arthritis:

Some studies on animals suggest that CBD could help to treat arthritis and relieve the associated inflammatory pain:

  • 2011 study found that CBD helped to reduce inflammatory pain in rats by affecting the way that pain receptors respond to stimuli.
  • 2014 review of the existing body of research on animals concluded that CBD may be an effective treatment for OA.
  • 2016 study found that the topical application of CBD had the potential to relieve pain and inflammation associated with arthritis.
  • 2017 study found that CBD might be a safe and useful treatment for OA joint pain.

In conclusion, when it comes to using CBD oil for arthritis pain, of course, no-one can say that it will cure your arthritis, but, there is enough talk out there to consider giving it a try. People who suffer from arthritis suffer and, besides pain blockers, there is very little mainstream treatment out there.

In addition to CBD oil, you could try other anti-inflammatories

Whilst not as strong as some, chamomile does have an anti-inflammatory effect and can have a surprisingly positive effect when it comes to arthritis. It is best to drink chamomile regularly to maintain a buildup of it in the bloodstream.

Gentle yoga

If the problem is a lack of synovial fluid, we have to remember that the body has the capability of making this. I believe that it isn’t making it, this could be an issue with compound transportation and this should probably be dealt with in a multi-approach holistic way. This approach would be strengthened by yoga

Emu oil

Emu oil has been steadily gaining popularity among arthritis sufferers as a strong anti-inflammatory. Healthtimes.com.au reports:

Emu oil, a traditional remedy gaining recognition as an effective treatment to reduce the pain and stiffness associated with arthritis. Alongside vast anecdotal evidence, there have been a number of studies to formally explore the benefits of this treatment, including a study by Victoria University in 2004, which found that both topical application and internal supplementation of emu oil offered significant relief from osteoarthritis.

  1. Thanks Jones. Your are right about everything! all the best Mate

  2. Hi Russ. Thanks for the great story! Yes, especially with osteoarthritis, it seems difficult to actually cure as it often comes down to the point where the cartilage is almost entirely worn down. Hence, the main approach is to manage pain and inflammation which I believe CBD oil does very well! Thanks for being here Mate.

  3. Thanks for your kind words Richard. It’s true that one of the issues with the industry right now is a lack of regulation, thus many oils that are sold have much less than the stated amount of CBD, not to mention other undisclosed additives so its good to find a brand you can trust. All the best!

  4. Thanks for the sweet comments Shan. Good to hear you are a herbalist and looking at things differently. Unfortunately people are still getting in trouble for refusing their children chemo. This is a diabolical situation given that chemo can cost as much as a house and has a success rate of less than 2.5%. Its great people are becoming more open to the possibilities of CBD. Thanks for being here!

  5. Sorry to hear about your pains Cathy. Yes, its still difficult in some places but that seems to be changing. Thanks for being here!

  6. I am starting to feel the pain in my knees and I am only in my mid 30’s. So yes, arthritis can happen way sooner than we thought especially with all the work stress we carry around our bodies nowadays. I’ve been wanting to venture into this remedy method but live in a country where the legality of CBD is still grey. But I am eager to give this a try after having a chat with my friend about it.

  7. I always enjoy reading your posts, this one is no different. You make some valid points, thank you for sharing these facts about arthritis and CBD oil.

After many years of prescribed pain medication use, along with other treatments, did much damage to several areas of my body, I became a huge natural healing advocate. I eventually became a herbalist and took my medical issues into my own hands. I definitely agree that a multi-faceted holistic program that treats the root cause of the problem instead of just the symptoms is the best option.

I have seen CBD oil do wonders for some of my clients with RA and OA, as well as other issues. I have not endorsed one particular brand in the past but I do like the criteria you used to select CBD Biocare. I have bookmarked your page so I can catch all your latest posts. Thanks for all the excellent information you provide!

  8. Very informative article! I have been quite fascinated by some exposure to the endocannabinoid system within our bodies and our need for homeostasis.

Also, the oncoming popularity of CBD is more apparent every day. It’s even being sold at WalMart. Since so much CBD is available by so many distributors, it can be very confounding. There is a rush for profits and I need to find trust.

CBD relaxes me for sure. But is that the small amount if THC? I see lots of claims. I bought some for hair regrowth. It didn’t work for me.

Full spectrum CBD seems the best.

I appreciate your sober and science – based information. Also, your refusal to speak of CBD as a “miracle cure” is very comforting. At this point, many are seeking credible sources of CBD, not “pie in the sky” promises.

Thanks for your refreshing outlook. It strengthens your brand.

  9. Hello Andy, I can confirm that CBD oil is very effective for arthritis sufferers because I am in fact living proof, I have suffered with arthritis in both of my knees for several years, and though I was taking pain relief medication regularly my arthritis and the pain was getting progressively worse, however all of that changed when I started taking CBD oil capsules the pain became a lot more bearable almost right away, I now take CBD oil daily and though I don’t think CBD oil will actually cure my arthritis, I can assure you that the pain is now almost has almost completely gone away, in fact I would advise anyone suffering with arthritis to start taking CBD oil as soon as possible. thank you for sharing.

  10. Arthritis is not age based, as it affects the old, so it does to the young. Two bone rubbing against each other is nothing to joke about, it causes severe pain, inability to cover distance, stiffness and the joints won’t move freely and it can lead the worst we can’t even imagine. As we know, CBD is a really reliable and effective anti-inflammatory product and it can help when it comes to arthritis. CBD oil can be uses to ease the pain of arthritis but not cure it, its still better that it works for pain. This article is really  educating and helpful, I’ll share it with some of my friends too. Thanks.
